Does Using Hemp Seeds for Weight Loss Actually Work?
Using hemp seeds for weight loss is probably not something you think of when you think of hemp is it?
If you’ve struggled to lose weight and if all the “fads” just never seemed to work for you, you are not alone. The good news is that you have access to the most natural way to lose weight and one that will feed your body the most balanced diet of proteins, vitamins and essential fatty acids on the planet. What’s this miracle drug? It’s not a drug at all! It’s simply one of nature’s super food…the hemp seed.
I’ve eaten hemp off and on in my own diet, I love to cook with it and my whole family is in on it with me, but just within the last month, I have started to become more conscious of how much hemp I am eating. I am eating a much higher concentration of hemp in my diet, especially at breakfast time (around 3 tablespoons just at that meal) and the results are pretty wonderful, even for the short amount of time I’ve been doing it. How much wonderful can you get in a month? With no other change in my daily routine, no added exercise, just an increase in hemp seeds or oil (about 4-6 tablespoons per day), I’ve managed to sheer off 9 pounds this past month. Doesn’t seem like a lot, I know, but what I find amazing about it is how my hunger level and craving for sweets is practically gone.
At first I wasn’t sure it would actually help me with my own weightloss so I started looking at other’s success stories with it. I came across this video of Mike Fata, the founder of Manitoba Harvest (and makes some awesome raw hemp seeds) as he talks about how hemp has helped him to achieve significant weight loss.
If you’ve never heard of Manitoba Harvest, they make various hemp hearts, hemp oil
and even hemp protein powders
(yes they even have a great vanilla flavor
). You can grab them on Amazon using the links I just provided…and since they are all prime products, you can get them shipped to you for free. However, if you’d rather buy locally, just keep in mind, local stores do tend to be more expensive but you can download this coupon and bring it in to save $1 on your purchase. Hemp Seeds Provide Balanced Nutrition
The hemp seed, or the shelled version called a hemp heart are extremely high in protein and contain all 20 amino acids including the nine essential amino acids our bodies need for optimum health. Hemp hearts also naturally contain a ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 of 3:1.
These healthy nutrients are exactly what our bodies need every day. By adding hemp seed based foods to your diet, you are giving your body the exact proportion of these nutrients that you need for a healthy lifestyle.
Reduce Your Hunger with Hemp Seed
Many people who make hemp hearts a part of their early morning breakfast find that they can sometimes be hunger free most of the day. You should always eat balanced meals and don’t skip important meals, but because of the reduced hunger, you should find that you are able to eat less at each meal, making your healthy eating lifestyle easier to follow through with.
Eat Hemp Seeds with Every Meal
It’s easy to mix hemp seeds or hemp hearts into any meal set before you. Sprinkle them on your cereal, in your morning power shake, on your yogurt, in your chicken crusts, on top of desserts or eat it raw by the handful. You can even lightly toast them (just don’t go over 350 degrees) and they taste absolutely wonderful, especially on salads.
Every person will differ of course, but if you’re open to trying something new, I highly recommend giving hemp seeds a try for your weight loss goals. You might just be amazed at what it can do for your health.
Awesome- I LOVE hemp seeds, chia seeds, flax…I’m a total health nut and these are one of my favorites 🙂
Same here Emily. I love all sorts of nuts and seeds, although something about the
“creaminess” has me addicted. Thanks for stopping by!
Thanks for the Info Misty,
It is nice to have healthy Choices and know that it does work before your start a new program so happy it is something we can buy anywhere.

Thanks for stopping by Mike and yup, totally agree, choices is what makes living a healthier lifestlye easier!
Can you by these at a regular supermarket? What other nutritional value do hemp seeds have? I only ask because unlike most of the population, I have never had a weight problem. As a matter of fact, I’ve been pretty thin my whole life. I weighed about 98lbs until I was about 30 and now at 34 I’m tipping the scales at 110lbs so I wouldn’t need to lose weight at all and I don’t need to use a product to suppress my hunger, but this sounds like a great option for other people who want to try a natural weight loss supplement. I will look for recipes online to see if there are any and perhaps I can add the seeds or heats to food every once in a while.
Just popping in from the UBC on FB 🙂
Paulette…check out this article http://www.hempinformer.com/nutritional-value-of-hemp-seeds-and-why-hemp-should-be-a-regular-part-of-your-diet/ It’s one I recently wrote about the nutritional value of hemp seeds and gives you a lot more insight into them. They absolutely don’t have to be used for weightloss…I just recently started using them for that purpose, along with healthy eating. They are just naturally one of natures awesome foods.
Oh and I almost forgot to answer your first question. Yes, you can buy them locally, but I do not believe from a supermarket. At least I’ve never seen them in mine. I’ve gotten them locally from organic supermarksets though. We have a place called Earth Fare here that I shop at quite frequently. But like I mentioned in the article above, you’ll catch a better price on Amazon…assuming you get free shipping from being a Prime member. At my local store, one 16 ounce bag of hemp hearts was almost $15 but on amazon it was just over $11, so I tend to do Amazon.
Thank you so much for sharing this info. I have to say I did not know that hemp could be used for weight loss and I am definitely going to give it a try as I am looking into ways to improve my lifestyle.
I’m glad you got the word then Miriam. It’s an awesome food and all natural. Definitely take a look around the site and be watching all this week during Hemp History Week because we will have lots of cool information and even some recipes for you.
are they available in any stores? never heard of this seeds before?
They are available in specialty stores locally like Trader joe’s, Earth Fare, Whole Foods, etc. Any place where you can buy organic foods will have hemp hearts, hemp oil and even hemp mlk…although if you are thinking of trying hemp milk, I recommend making your own. I have a recipe on this site if you do a search for it.
You’ve just opened my eyes a bit there Misty. Never tried hemp seeds or oil, shall keep my eyes open for it.
That’s great Jan! You should pick up a bag and give it a try. It’s an inexpensive food to try out and I promise you, you will fall in love with them the first time you try it!
I like using hemp seeds with chia seeds (and sometimes flax.) I like the crunch!
I do too! And it really seems like hemp seeds hold their crunch for quite a while. By the way…have you tried them toasted? I recently got some from Hippie Butter and they were amazing!
I started eating hemp when I became a vegetarian about 13 years ago. I love them in most everything.
Thanks for commenting Amanda! You’re right, there isn’t hardly a food I can think of that they don’t taste good in.
Never heard of hemp seeds for weightloss… I gotta give this a try! Thanks Missy.
You’re welcome Bonnie. I hope if you give it a try you come back and let me know how you did on it. It’s not a miracle, but it’s an awesome way to get healthy eating in!
Dear Misty: I have heard that hemp seeds help one to lose weight but I have added them to my morning oatmeal in order to get more protein and I am gaining weight. I cannot think of any other cause. I have had a lifelong problem with weight but I have weighed 130 pounds every day stripped before breakfast for years. Now I have suddenly shot up 4 or 5 pounds. I am worried about this since the only change I have made is to eat 2 heaping tablespoons of hemp seeds and a few more nuts on my oatmeal than usual. I guess I just have not got a fast enough metabolism to burn up the added fat.
Hi Pat…so it’s really hard to tell you for sure what’s going on without knowing what else your diet consists of. You couldn’t add hemp seeds to oatmeal and then for lunch eat a big juicy cheeseburger loaded with fat and have a pizza for dinner and not expect to gain weight. Not saying that’s what you’re doing, just saying I’m missing information. I also don’t know what your exercise regime consists of or any other health issues like a thyroid or diabetes issue. Also, keep in mind that nuts are healthy fats but they are still fats. What I would start with is asking, what else are you doing in your diet. How’s your exercise and have you been checked for any other health concerns?
