Hemp hearts are available through a variety of retailers and one of the most common retailers you will run across is Manitoba Harvest. They currently offer two types of hemp hearts: natural
and organic
.
Hemp hearts are the what you have left after shelling a hemp seed and are filled with some of the best nutrition you can get from nature. In fact in just one serving of hemp hearts, you gain 10g of protein plus it’s a great way to add the perfect ratio of Omega-6 and Omega-3 EFAs. Hemp hearts are the most nutritious seed you can eat and actually contain more protein and omega’s and less carbs than the same serving size of Chia or Flax. It’s the perfect super-food!
You can eat hemp hearts straight out of the bag or put them in salads, on your toast or sprinkle in your oatmeal or yogurt. You can literally put these little seeds into practically any dish. These hemp hearts are also non-GMO project certified.
The great thing about hemp hearts is they don’t have to be mixed into foods if you like to eat seeds with a mild nutty flavor. I have often times simply grabbed a spoonful or two straight of the bag and eaten it as a snack.
Packaging
Manitoba Harvest is an excellent brand with a fantastic reputation for their freshness. Freshness is important because all seeds will go rancid over time and if you are eating them for the nutritional value, you want to ensure freshness. Manitoba Harvest helps you ensure that you are getting fresh when they print the packaged date on the back of the bag. I find that to be a really cool feature from them and gives me peace of mind over the freshness of my hemp hearts. Be sure to close the bag and store in your refrigerator after opening.
Price
I have tried a variety of different brands of hemp seeds and one of the things that keeps me buying Manitoba Harvest hemp seeds is the price. So far, they have been the most affordable brand, however, I did notice in local stores the price is a few dollars more expensive so I do recommend buying online especially if you get free shipping.
Where to Buy Hemp Hearts
There are two places I purchase hemp hearts from Manitoba Harvest. Typically I buy from Amazon, simply because I am a prime member so I get free shipping. However, I also buy directly from the Manitoba Harvest website, especially for larger orders due to free shipping.
Update: All month long during June (2014) you can get 20% off any product you order from the Manitoba Harvest website.(click here for the coupon code)
Conclusion
I will probably always be a customer of Manitoba Harvest. Their products are fantastic and their pricing is incredible competitive.
Great review Misty. You really know your subject and it shows in everything you write here. Next time I pass a health food store I am going right in and looking for hemp. 🙂
Thanks for the compliment Ana. I doubt I know everything but because I use this every single day of my life, I can definitely share what I’ve learned from first hand experiences and from my own research…which I always do for anything I put in my body on a regular basis.
Hi Misty,
Nice review on harvest hemp hearts, thanks for sharing:) I learn more and more about the benefits of Hemp, every time I read your posts, thank you!
You’re welcome Joan and if I can help with any other questions or topics you’d like to read about just let me know. 🙂
Misty, is there a benefit to using hemp hearts over regular hemp seeds?
It really depends on what you’re using them for. I do know that with the shells still on you gain more fiber, however, they are hard, as if you were eating a sunflower seed, and not every recipe you use them for is that going to do well in. However, I will say I recently tried some hemp seeds from Hippie Butter and OMG they were the bomb! I rarely eat the full seeds, but I’m getting more of the toasted ones because I was shoveling them in like popcorn. So good!
Thanks, I have heard this is a good product, did not know it was not easy to find though.
It’s very easy online, not so easy locally. So far I’ve seen them at one store near me. There may be more, but not at the obvious places I visit. The best thing you can do is find the best price and see what you can figure out for shipping. If I buy directly from Manitoba Harvest, I want to place a $100 order to get the free shipping, especially when a sale like the 20% off they have going on now. Otherwise, I just do Amazon since it’s automatically cheaper there AND I get free shipping as a prime member.
What do they taste like Misty? Is there something you can share that would make me understand the ‘taste” of the hemp hearts? I think I told you that for me, it’s all about taste.
Don’t tell me it tastes like chicken! 🙂
Have you ever eaten pine nuts before Bonnie? They sort of remind me of pine nuts but also sort of resemble sunflower seeds as well…especially when toasted. Maybe it’s best to say that they taste like a nutty sunflower seed…and chicken…ok kidding about chicken. Basically, they taste like several different kinds of regular nuts, even walnuts might be comparable, but in a much more mild flavor.
Hey Misty,
What are the health benefits of these hemp hearts? I am intrigued to try them. 🙂
Beth
Oh my dear Beth, have I got a read for you. Check out this article I wrote a little while back that goes over all the nutritional benefits to hemp hearts. http://www.hempinformer.com/nutritional-value-of-hemp-seeds-and-why-hemp-should-be-a-regular-part-of-your-diet/ And of course if you have any specific questions, don’t hesitate to ask!
Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts are the best! Misty’s reviews enticed me to buy from Amazon with no shipping fees. Their nutty taste is quite good and they blend into most anything. Filling too which helps you feel full sooner.
Marilyn I’m so glad you responded here. I’ve been wondering what you thought about them. Hopefully you can try out some of the recipes I’ve been posting….I have some awesome ones coming up…especially a baked hemp seed chicken one that is OMG delish!
Can’t say I’ve tried hemp hearts yet…but I’m definitely open to it! Would be a great addition to curry I think
Come on over to the dark side Cory…it’s nice over here in hemp land! 😉 And yes, while I haven’t tried it with curry, I do know nutty flavors tend to go well with it. I might have to find a recipe and give it a try.
Oooh I like the curry idea. You have got me thinking here Misty – will have a weekend shop-a-thon
