Where is the Best Place to Buy Hemp Seeds?
Since I’ve started including hemp seeds into my diet, I’ve sampled hemp seeds and hemp hearts from a variety of retailers. However, since it’s Ask a Question Wednesday,I thought I’d answer a question that gets asked in the comments section and on our Facebook page often enough and that is….where is the best place to buy hemp seeds?
For the most part, the seeds themselves are pretty standard across the board, however, there are differences such as:
- Organic versus Non-Organic
- Pricing
- Packaging
- Shipping times
- Shipping costs
- Whole seeds, shelled seeds or toasted seeds
- Variety of forms (seeds, oil, powder)
Buy from Local Health Stores
Buying local will let you get your product quicker and without paying shipping costs, however, the drawback is that usually the selection of products will be smaller and the cost is generally higher when you buy locally versus purchasing online. I’ve heard this isn’t always the case, but so far it has been for my local organic grocery store.
Typically you won’t find hemp seeds in general grocery stores, instead, you will need to check specialty health or organic grocery stores such as Earth Fare or Whole Foods.
Buy Direct from Retailers Online
Your next option is to buy directly from the manufacturer of the hemp seed product. There are plenty of retailers to buy directly online from including Manitoba Harvest, Nutiva
and Hippie Butter just to name a few.
The great thing about buying direct from retailers is that you have access to their entire product line and bundle deals they offer. Manitoba Harvest offers a special bundle pack with hemp seeds, hemp oil and hemp protein powder, that you can only get at the special discounted rate through them. Nutiva, is another fantastic one that has a huge catalog of products available through their website that isn’t found (or at least very easily) through the giant online retailers such as Amazon. There are some retailers like Hippie Butter, who’s products are only available through their store.
Mega Online Retailers
The mega online retailers, like Amazon are great resources for hemp seed products. They offer products from a variety of brands as well as give you tons of options in various pricing ranges. What I really like about buying my hemp seeds from Amazon is that I get free shipping as an Amazon prime member. I also get my orders in two days when I buy a prime products (and I only ever buy prime products) so there isn’t much of a wait time. I’ve also found buying from Amazon tends to lead to cheaper prices since they buy in bulk. Pair that with free shipping and we have a winner.
So there you go, my complete list of course on where to buy hemp seed from. I hope it’s helpful to you!
Thanks so much for the reference. I’ll be looking for them.
You’re welcome Christy! Thanks for commenting.
Aha!
We’d probably buy them from somewhere like Holland & Barrett or Appleseeds! 🙂
That sounds about right for the UK Sophie. You can get all kinds of health food in those places – including lots you’ve never heard of.
Misty, I’m just curious how similar or if there is a similarity between hemp seed and other seeds, such as flax seed – if so, do you know how they compare in nutritional value, health benefits, price, and availability?
I am actually doing a series comparing hemp seeds to the other big name seeds. I’ve finished up the one for flax seed, you can find it here: http://www.hempinformer.com/hemp-seed-versus-flax-seed-powerhouse-seed-comparison/ Ill be doing the other seeds soon so keep a lookout. Thanks for commenting!
I still need to buy these! I’m using the Hemp protein powder in my juices/smoothies and it doesn’t change the taste at all, but at least I’m getting protein!
I really want to make homemade hemp milk, so I guess I’ll break down and buy the seeds! 🙂 I am a prime member of Amazon too so I guess you know where I’ll be ordering from for the first batch! LOL
Did you get plain hemp protein powder or did you get a flavored? I find the plain one doesn’t change the taste much at all, but I really the vanilla in my smoothies.
I have a big bag of the hemp hearts and I’m trying to included them into things like smoothies and yogurt.
What are the best quality & least toxic hemp seeds on the market?
Who produces the #1 in this category??
THx

I just bought a small amount of hemp HULLS from Winco..because it said it had 10 G protein. It was about $7 an ounce. Can this be true? And also I would assume to use it the same.? Any feedback? At least now I am a wealth of new information ( ;
$7 for an ounce seems pretty steep to me. You can purchase an entire pound of hemp seeds (unhulled) for less than $10 on amazon. I have to say I’m not a fan of eating the whole hemp seed with the shell on. I do however make hemp milk from them, which they are excellent for. But yes, I would say you could use them just like hemp hearts, you’d just need to like the extra crunch and chewing you’d have to do to eat them.
